Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
Straight answers about card machines, merchant fees, statement reviews and payment services for UK businesses.
Why can’t you just tell me your best rates?
Pricing depends on card turnover, transaction types and the current setup. The headline rate is only part of the picture: PCI, dashboard, authorisation, secure-processing and card-not-present charges can matter too. Send a recent statement and I can tell you what applies.
How often should I review merchant fees?
At least once a year, and whenever your provider increases rates, your turnover changes or you add online, telephone or payment-link transactions.
Is it free to review my merchant statement?
Yes. The review is completely free with no obligation. I check your current rates and merchant service fees, then explain whether anything can be improved. If your current provider is already competitive, I’ll tell you that too.
How can I check if my card machine fees are too high?
Review a recent merchant statement. It should show transaction rates, credit and debit processing fees, terminal rental and additional service charges. I can analyse it and explain whether the total cost looks competitive.
What happens after I send my merchant statement?
I review your current rates and fees, compare them with a suitable Dojo arrangement and explain whether switching would help. If not, you get reassurance that your current deal is already competitive.
Can I switch if I’m still in a contract?
Often, yes. In some cases a new arrangement can buy out an existing merchant-services contract up to £3,000, subject to eligibility and terms. I will check the contract and explain the options rather than assume.
Is switching card machine providers complicated?
Usually it is straightforward. I help with the new terminal setup and the move so your business can keep taking card payments with as little disruption as possible.
What types of businesses benefit from a fee review?
Almost any business that accepts cards: garages, dealerships, workshops, pubs, bars, restaurants, retailers, trades, salons, clubs and mobile businesses.
How much can a business save on card processing?
It depends on your provider, turnover, card mix and fixed charges. Some businesses save a small amount each month; others save hundreds or thousands per year. The statement is the only honest way to know.
Will I be pressured to switch?
No. I’m a Dojo partner, and I supply and support Dojo equipment, but I will still tell you if your existing deal is strong and switching is not worthwhile. There is no obligation.
What is the best card machine for a UK retail store?
For many established retailers, a standalone terminal with Wi-Fi and 4G backup is a strong option when speed, reliability and settlement timing matter. The best fit depends on your turnover, counter, connectivity and card mix.
Do retail card machines need Wi-Fi?
Not always. Dojo mobile terminals include 4G, and a terminal with both Wi-Fi and 4G can continue taking payments if broadband fails, subject to mobile coverage.
Can a card machine connect to my till?
Many providers offer integrations with compatible EPOS systems. Check your specific till and software version before signing up. Dojo machines are compatible with over 450 EPOS systems.
How quickly do card payments reach my bank?
It depends on the provider and your agreement. Dojo offers next-day settlement options; other providers may settle on the next working day or take longer. Check the terms if cash flow matters.
Still not sure? Send me the statement and I’ll explain it.
